The Goal: Weight Loss

The Vital Behaviors: Eat healthy, Exercise for 30 min/day

Personal Motivation: Well, you have to come up with that one on your own. Why do you want to lose weight? Because you want to be able to play with your kids? Is it because you want to be healthy enough to conceive? Maybe it's to fit into your wedding dress again? Think of the reason that you'd like to lose weight and hold on to that, don't lose sight.

Personal Ability: Ask yourself: "What skills do you need to lose achieve the vital behaviors?" If you need to know how to work out, visit my fitness page. If you need to know how to eat healthy, visit my healthy eating page. Maybe you don't know how to cook. Watch some youtube videos, take a local class. Remember this is about skills. What new skills do you need?

Social Motivation and Social Ability: Recruit your friends and family to help you. They need to be on your side. The question is, do they make it easier or harder for you to lose weight? Do they motivate you or discourage you? Do you need your husband to watch your kids for an hour a day so you can exercise? Do you need your friends to stop encouraging you to eat desserts? Figure out where your friends and family undermine your plan and ask them to stop.

Structural Motivation: Structural motivation is about rewards. The key is that they must be directly related to my behaviors of eating well and following my training schedule. So, if my reward is new workout clothes every month that I complete my training, I have to hold myself accountable and not get that reward unless I actually complete my training.

Structural Ability: What things do you need to help you lose weight? Maybe you need a gym membership, to clean out that extra room in your house to do at-home exercises in, a slow cooker so you can have healthy meals ready for you when you get home. Honestly, this can as big as a gym membership or as little as a sign on your mirror reminding you to go to the gym.

I am not a certified Vital Smarts trainer and I am not affiliated with the company. I read the book, and you can too! You can find it online here.
